Ingredients

  • 1 cup Ketchup
  • ¼ cup Apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup Brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Molasses
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • ½ tsp Black pepper
  • ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ½ tsp Liquid smoke (optional)

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups/spoons
  • Glass jar or airtight container (for storage)

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne (if using), and liquid smoke (if using).
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed (more sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tang, or spices for heat).
  5. Remove from heat and let cool before using.
  6. Transfer to an airtight jar or bottle and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Spicier Version: Add 1 tsp chili powder or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Sweeter Version: Increase brown sugar to ⅓ cup.
  • Smokier Flavor: Add an extra ½ tsp liquid smoke.
  • For Grilling: Brush onto meat during the last 5-10 minutes of cooking to prevent burning.
