Ingredients

  • 6 cups Stale bread (French or brioche)
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 4 large Eggs
  • ¾ cup Granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup Brown sugar
  • ¼ cup Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg
  • ½ tsp Raisins (optional)
  • ¼ tsp Salt

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups/spoons

Method

  1. Preheat Oven – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare Bread – Cut stale bread into 1-inch cubes and spread evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Make Custard – In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Soak Bread – Pour custard mixture over bread, pressing down lightly to ensure even soaking. Let sit for 10-15 mins (or refrigerate for 30 mins for deeper absorption).
  5. Bake – Bake for 40-45 mins until the top is golden and the center is set (no liquid jiggle).
  6. Cool & Serve – Let cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with caramel, whipped cream, or vanilla sauce.

Notes

✔ Best with stale bread – Day-old bread absorbs custard better.
✔ Add-ins: Try chocolate chips, nuts, or apples for variation.
✔ Storage: Keep refrigerated for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
✔ Make it boozy: Add 2 tbsp bourbon or rum to the custard for extra flavor!
