In a bowl, mix warm water (110°F/45°C), sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 mins until frothy.
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and milk. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead by hand (10 mins) or with a stand mixer (5 mins) until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled.
Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan. Cover and rise for 30–45 mins.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25–30 mins until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
